What an election! For the BBC and S4C coverage of the Wales Election, and the BBC Coverage of the Scotland Election I was fortunate enough to be part of the team that provided 3D VR and AR data driven real-time graphics for 4 shows happening in parallel.
Myself and Zoë Thomas modelled and textured in Blender (we love open source) 3D versions of the Senedd chamber (with some help from our colleagues at BBC Wales Design) and the Holyrood Chamber (with help from our colleagues from BBC Scotland Design and a LiDAR scan provided by the University of Aberdeen).
From this we created beauty renders for title sequenced, as well as creating optimised versions of the models for use in real time live graphics.
Then alongside a great team of real time designers and developers (Tony Sinclair, Andrew Lewis, Zoë Thomas, Nathan Smith, Matthew Russel) and together with the Graphics and Automation team we built a suite of modular Vizrt graphics that could be data fed to tell the story of the election as soon as results were coming in.
This resulted in our setup being used throughout on a variety of outlets (BBC One, BBC One Wales, S4C, BBC Scotland) to paint a clear picture of what happened and what it all means.
Great job to all of the Design, Editorial, Technical and Studio crews involved to make this all happen.
